Matt Smith – Head Coach and Rackets Manager
Matt is a LTA Level 5 Master Performance Coach and an LTA Coach Education Tutor who is responsible for developing and managing the tennis, squash and padel tennis programmes.
As a junior player he is still the only British winner of Tarbes, known as the under 14 World Championships and also won the U14 European Team Championships, U16 and U18 British Nationals. His senior playing career saw him achieve a career high of ATP 290, winning 5 professional singles titles.
Matt’s coaching career began is 2007 and has since seen him gain experience in many different arenas. Before joining HLTSC, Matt worked as Head of Junior Academy at a high performance centre in Wales, as Head Coach of a high performance academy in New York City and as Head of Performance at a performance centre in London.
As well as the LTA Master Performance Coach qualification Matt has also achieved the USTA High Performance and PTR Professional Grade qualifications.
Matt works to a high level of intensity and detail but enjoys nothing more than seeing people of all ages and levels out on the court enjoying themselves.
Rebecca Lee – Deputy Head Coach
Rebecca is a LTA Level 4 Senior Performance Coach and began her tennis coaching career at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre in 1995, working mainly with mini tennis and school’s outreach.
Since starting work at Huddersfield Tennis Club in 2001 she has gained experience with all ages and abilities. Currently Rebecca teaches mini juniors and adults and thoroughly enjoys the mix of coaching that this involves.
Her on court work includes individual and group lessons, school taster sessions and team practice sessions. Off court work includes admin for the coaching programme, ensuring the junior and ladies teams are running smoothly.
Rebecca is a qualified and licensed referee and runs internal and external competitions at the club as well as playing for the club in all leagues (local, Yorkshire and Aegon). Rebecca also represents and captains for Yorkshire in the 35s and 40s age groups, and is the Yorkshire ladies co-ordinator for all the age groups that enter the Senior Inter County Championships.
Tim Weston Jenkins – Tennis Coach
Tim is an LTA Level 4 Coach who began his training in 1997 at the Warren Jacques’ Academy at the Army Tennis Centre, Aldershot. He has worked with a wide range of players from mini tennis to adults, including several performance players starting out on the ITF tour.
After relocating to Yorkshire, Tim spent two years as Club Coach at Salts’ Tennis Club in Saltaire, Bradford. He then moved to Kirklees and started working in secondary education, alongside the LTA, developing curriculum delivery and scholarship programmes in schools.
Tim introduced tennis as a focus sport in the G.C.S.E. Physical Education syllabus at Newsome Sports College where he helped introduce thousands of people to the game. He also set up and ran his own successful academy at Calder High School in Mytholmroyd.
Tim combines physical and mental coaching to help players progress and achieve success in the game he loves. He has coached thousands of players over the last 20+ years with a key aim of instilling a lifelong passion for the game, alongside maximizing their potential as players.
Kate Mallin – Tennis Coach
Kate is a LTA Level 3 coach with over 7 years experience teaching tennis.
She started playing tennis when she was 6 years old and between the ages of 9 and 15 played tournaments most weekends and represented Yorkshire. She currently competes for her local club at Holmfirth in the Huddersfield League and for HLTSC in the Yorkshire and National Leagues.
Kate is a keen footballer and since the age of 11 has played for Huddersfield Ladies FC where she is the captain of the first team and plays in the FA Women’s Premier League.
Most of Kate’s work at HLTSC is with the under 10’s and she has built up a strong reputation as being a good teacher for the younger players. Kate’s sessions are both disciplined and fun allowing her pupils to learn whilst enjoying the game.
With the experience Kate has gained in both tennis and football, she understands the necessary competitive nature of sport, but believes that above all you need to enjoy it. Her attitude is that enjoying your sport helps you relax and optimise your performance.
Ellis Ward – Tennis Coach
Ellis is a LTA Level 3 coach and has been coaching for 6 years. As a player he was a junior top 10 in GB, winning the Under 14 internation Wilson Cup in Hungary. He is also a Yorkshire Champion at every age-group, including men’s.
Ellis has also had some notable success as a coach. He coached Serena Nash and Lydia Burrows, both Yorkshire girls who were within the top 10 in Great Britain and have gone on to play Division 1 USA College tennis.
Furthermore, Ellis coached Euan Wilson-Baig for 2.5 years who rose to top 10 in GB and Yorkshire champion in that time.
Numerous Yorkshire champions have been coached by Ellis and he was also Player/Coach of the successful Cragg Valley Men’s team who have won 5 Calderdale league titles in 10 years.
Ellis enjoys working with players of any level who give their best efforts. His goal is to promote and grow tennis in Yorkshire and we are delighted to have him in our team at HLTSC.
Ellis is also a Mont Blanc Summiteer and a Level 2 Gym Instructor.
Craig Jarrom – Pro Hitter
Craig is our Pro-Hitter at HLTSC, and an LTA Level 1 assistant who plays at a very good level. This makes him perfect for players looking to top up their practice hours on court. As our Pro-Hitter, Craig takes lead from the individual coach and then drills the areas of work to a high intensity.
