Matt Smith personally runs the Pro Academy at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club which he bases around his own teaching philosophy he calls The Three Rocks. He brings a wealth of experience to the academy given his high performance playing and coaching career.
The Pro Academy is for players who take training seriously and have high aspirations in the game. The highest profile alumni from the Pro Academy are:
- Marcus Willis – ATP 322
- Neil Pauffley – ATP 406
- Francesca Stephenson – WTA 618
- Sam Bossem – Tennis Europe 33
- Ollie Hong – 2016 secured a full scholarship to a Division 1 American University
- Conor Tordoff – 2016 secured a full scholarship to a Division 1 American University
The academy regularly hosts players who arrive for training blocks whilst competing in Europe. For example, Matt recently worked with Usue Arconada (WTA 443) whilst she played at Junior Wimbledon.
In addition, Matt has personally coached players to three Futures singles titles, three national titles, 17 county titles and four US sectional titles.
Matt coached our most high profile player, Marcus Willis, when he faced the legendary Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2016 and was interviewed by Rob Walker on the day of Marcus’ big match. You can see his interview below.
A regular day at the academy consists of four hours on court, two hours preparation and cool down work and one and a half hours of physical training. Programmes are bespoke and cater to the individual rather than for the squad.
In addition, the Pro Academy offers:
- On site physiotherapist
- Musculoskeletal screening
- Video analysis
- Tournament planning and travel
- Nutritional education
- Expert guest coaches and consultants
