Bar & Lounge Hire

The ambience in the club house bar is warm and inviting and it’s great to have a well earned drink after a hard game.

There are also many social events held throughout the year, organised by the social committee. We have held quiz nights, an Elvis night, wine tasting evenings, race nights, charity events, a children’s Christmas party and Christmas Carol service, which are all well attended occasions.

The clubhouse is available for hire for private functions both to members and non-members. It is an ideal venue for birthday parties, wedding receptions, anniversaries and the like. Contact reception on: 42 25 41 for more information and booking arrangements.

The largest event by far is the HLTSC Ball and it has its origins in the early days of the club.  This event is held every two years and is a grand social gathering. The ball is a fantastic evening out, providing excellent entertainment with a live band and disco.  The combination of delicious food and wine, good company and a buzzing atmosphere is second to none.

Last year the 125th Anniversary Ball was held at the club where a Marquee was erected on court one. This occasion really was the highlight of the Club’s 125th Year.

The social events are organised by the social committee and new ideas and new members are always welcome

Please find the following profile of our Head Caterer, Sue Pawson:

Sue Pawson has been working at the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club since 2008 and currently undertakes the role of head caterer.

Originally bought up in Linthwaite, Sue moved to Kent at the tender age of 5. It was here where her love for ballet and tap came to the fore and dreams of becoming a professional dancer soon became apparent. Although Sue and her family would soon move back up north to Birkby, her love for dancing never diminished and it became evident that her passion helped her develop into a flourishing talent.

“When I was growing up I was dancing at a standard above my age”

Feeling she had reached the limits of ballet, Sue soon spread her interests to other forms of dance and took up ballroom and Latin through her teenage years. It seemed to dominate her life as her interest in school began to wane.

“I hated secondary school. I just couldn’t wait to leave and get money in my pocket”

As soon as she left school, Sue undertook a number of catering jobs as she looked to establish herself in the working environment.

“My first job was in this hotel where I worked in the kitchen. I also ran a snack bar on the side, serving hot chocolate and all sorts”

After working in a number of hotels, Sue’s life then moved onto another chapter.

“Whilst I was working away in Scotland I met someone”

At the age of 25, Sue moved up to Scotland where she carried on pursuing a career in catering. She also did a bit of caring on the side but soon found the emotionality’s that go with the job too much to handle.

It became apparent that Scotland was a bigger cultural transition for Sue than she had first expected and the rural settings appeared a far cry from the streets of Birkby.

“It was more archaic up there. Women were not allowed to buy a round and if somebody asked you to dance you had to dance”

It was clear that Sue was unsettled to life north of the border and she returned back to Yorkshire where she joined the HLTSC. After a few years at the club, Sue then moved onto the Lockwood Rugby Club where she became head chef. However, it seemed her heart was still at the HLTSC and she would regularly come back to do a number of functions.

She rejoined the club in 2008 and soon reacquainted herself with life in the clubs kitchen.

“I approached the club and they said yes. I found I would get angry if someone got the kitchen so that’s why I wanted to go back”

After getting married last year, Sue finally seems settled in a place where she has always referred to as home. Her passion for her work is reminiscent to that shown towards her dancing and she feels that it has helped bring a community feel to the club.

“The nicest thing for me is seeing the kids and families all eat together, gives a real homely feel which I like to think I have bought to the club”
